I was asked to do a design for a Business Card for a Milliner (someone who makes hats).
She asked me to do a particular style of illustration using cross hatching as she wanted something that was different. She asked me to draw a number of different hats and hat making equipment. We sat down together and came up with this design.
I don't know anything about hat boxes, but I took a look at some hat boxes online and the one in this picture with the word "Milliner" on it looks a little different in that it seems much taller toward the back than in the front; is that the actual shape of a hat box from this hat maker? Or did you draw the box that way to give a more playful or whimsical aspect? (It's nice looking art anyway, catching the eye as it does.)
I think it was actually going to be a parchment scroll at first so it was a lot more angled than it is now. It looked very different until we decided the hats should be arranged the way they are with all the hat making stuff around it. So I changed the scroll and reduced the back of the hat box to make it look more realistic (it looked awful before) but we still quite liked the dramatic feel leaving it a bit higher gave.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
